Lois Kathryn Scroggins was born on February 22, 1928, in Clinton, Nebraska, to Daisy Viola and William F. Vandewarker. She died peacefully, with family at her side, at 6 p.m. on December 8, 2016.

She had eight siblings. Helen Phoenix, Bill Vandewarker, and Lorn Vandewarker precede her in
death. She is survived by Jean Wait, Ruth Myers, June Edwards, Harry Vandewarker, and Erma Piper.

Lois’s family moved from Nebraska to Merlin, Oregon, when she was 3 years old. She was raised in a loving home, overflowing with music. She played the ukulele, the guitar, and the piano, and loved to dance. Together with her siblings, they played in a family band, performing at local dances, and even on the radio.

She was married on January 5, 1946 to her childhood sweetheart, Charles William Scroggins. They were married 56 years before Charles passed away on Feb 13, 2002. Lois was a kind and giving person. She had a strong faith in the Lord, accepting Jesus Christ as her savior at only 4 years old. She was treasured by her friends and family for her gentle spirit, her plucky humor, and her incredible strength.

She fostered at least 10 children during her life, and treated every one as if they were a blessing.

She worked for many years as the head cook at Oak Lane Retirement Home. Lois never lived in the lap of luxury, but she made life comfortable and warm through her thrift, hard work and faith. She was intelligent and active, famous for her indulgent cooking and her appetite for life.

Lois was a voracious reader, and loved puzzles, crafts, and games. She played cards regularly with her friends, and hosted legendary family barbecues. She loved the outdoors, making her home for many years in the beautiful mountains of Wimer, Oregon.

Lois is survived by two daughters, Susan Scroggins and Dian Witcher; three grandchildren, Tamara Ross, Shane Witcher, and Lorissa Scroggins; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She will be missed by many who considered her their adopted mother or grandmother.

She was laid to rest on December 10, 2016 at the Hawthorne Memorial Gardens, beside her husband. A sermon was given by her pastor and friend, Pastor Milton Hayes.
